Somebody Had To Say It

Did you see Bill Cosby on the Oprah show the other day? The show's title was Bill Cosby Calls Out Dirty Laundry. Cosby's been taking heat from people for years over a speech he gave in 2004. He was criticized for "airing the dirty laundry" of the Black community, namely:

According to Bill, the desperate situation of many minorities has resulted in some of these shocking statistics:

* At least a third of all homeless men are African-American.
* African-Americans make up 12 percent of the general population, but they account for almost half of the prison population.
* According to the U.S. Justice Department, 28 percent of black men born today will go to prison in their lifetimes.
* Black youth are six times more likely to die of homicide than white youth and seven times more likely to commit a homicide.
* Homicide is the leading cause of death among African-American males ages 15 to 29.

Frustrated by these numbers, Bill gave an unexpected, uncensored speech in 2004: "In the neighborhood that most of us grew up in, parenting is not going on," he said. "They're buying things for the kid—$500 sneakers. For what? They won't buy or spend $250 on Hooked on Phonics.

"It's not what they're doing to us. It's what we're not doing. … Brown vs. the Board of Education—these people who marched and were hit in the face with rocks and punched in the face to get an education, and we've got these knuckleheads walking around who don't want to learn English. I know you all know it, but I just want to get you as angry as you ought to be," he said.

Cosby recognizes that the people who call his comments "controversial" are upset because he spoke of these things publicly, instead of getting upset about the "dirty laundry" itself and doing something about it.

In a similar vein, Mychal Massie's commentary for Word Net Daily, "Beat whitey, get a reward," states:

Whites are not the enemy of blacks – the Jacksons and Sharptons, et al., along with a government that sanctions divisions based upon race, are the enemies of blacks. I will be soundly criticized for saying it, but until blacks start taking personal responsibility for themselves, their actions, their families and their neighborhoods, the last thing they should do is blame white people for anything – anything that is, save for being weak and unwilling to stand up for their own personal dignity.

Remember when Elvis Presley sang "In the Ghetto (The Vicious Circle)?" That song - well no, not the song, but the well meaning, but misguided sentiments behind it, were part of the problem.

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'cause if there's one thing that she don't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto

[Because it's not her fault that she didn't know about birth control, and in fact had no idea that free birth control pills were available to her (back then, anyway)]

People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way

[The "helping hand" was a handout in those days, and the handout rewarded single-parent households with lots of children, giving rise to the culture of entitlement]

Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto

And his hunger burns
so he starts to roam the streets at night
and he learns how to steal
and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto

[Maybe if he'd had positive male role models, instead of drug dealers (not their fault) who fathered children indiscriminately (having never heard of birth control, either) and who never gave a thought to paying child support because that would take away the handouts to the single mothers, he might not have roamed the streets at night with criminals]

Then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

[The gun (as well as cigarettes and booze) was bought with currency that somehow can't be used for groceries]

As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto

As her young man dies,
on a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
another little baby child is born
In the ghetto

[and so it goes]

I have no doubt that ghettos, or "projects" are vermin infested, crime ridden, filthy places to live. I also have no doubt that neither I nor any other whitey I know of went over there and urinated on the walls, left trash and rotting food in the hallways to attract rats and roaches, ripped out the copper tubing, stuffed the toilets with rags, punched holes in the walls, took doors off the hinges, stole the air conditioners, or broke out the windows, nor did we do all these things again every time repairs were made, until one day, no repairs were made at all, except by court order.

Somebody had to say it. I'm just sayin.

As Cosby pointed out, these problems don't pertain to all Blacks. There are many Blacks who embrace the concept of personal responsibility. It's encouraging that they're talking about it, even in the face of criticism.

The longer dirty laundry sits, the more it stinks. It's about time someone aired it. Cleaning it is the next step. It will take a lot of effort and courage to do it. The civil rights workers who labored so long and marched so bravely for dignity and the right to work and live the American dream know all about what it will take to make it happen.

"Atheists' Worst Nightmare"

Here's the famous Ray Comfort/Kirk Cameron video "disproving" evolution with um, a banana. This clip is augmented with commentary, including pics of how bananas have evolved. It's a scream. Enjoy. Oh, and enjoy this wonderful cartoon, too. :)

Let those with ears hear...

Insurance industry critics of Michael Moore's Sicko have complained that he used outdated cases from the "bad old days of HMOs" to document the healthcare outrages depicted in his movie. Well, here's a case that comes from today's headlines.

United Healthcare denied hearing aids to a girl who was born without ears. They denied the claims four different times. Then, after the media got involved (and with the publicity surrounding Sicko, no doubt), they've had a change of "heart."

Update: Girl Will Get Special Hearing Aid

One down, 49 to go

State Farm suspends Miss. policy sales
By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN, Associated Press Writer

State Farm Insurance Cos. is suspending sales of any new commercial or homeowner policies in Mississippi effective Friday, citing in part a wave of litigation it has faced after Hurricane Katrina, a company official said Wednesday.

After Katrina, why anyone in any state would buy insurance from State Farm is beyond me.

Silly Views

I've been following this story. You probably remember Dr. Richard Leakey, the famous fossil finder. His team discovered "Turkana Boy," the most complete skeleton of prehistoric man ever found, which is scheduled to go on display in Kenya later this year.

Ever since the announcement of the new exhibit, the Kenyan museum has been under seige to relegate the upcoming 160,000-piece fossil collection to a back room because Bishop Boniface Adoyo, head of Kenya's 35 evangelical denominations, can't stand the fact that he might have been descended from the likes of Turkana Boy, rather than fully-human ancestors created by God 6,000 years ago. He claims to have 10 million followers, and is calling for a boycott of the museum because "These sorts of silly views are killing our faith."

You can read more about it here.

Multi-Topic

Another Savior Bites the Dust

Iraqi cult leader killed in Najaf battle
Some highlights from the article (copyright Reuters):

The leader of an Iraqi cult who claimed to be the Mahdi, a messiah-like figure in Islam, was killed in a battle on Sunday near Najaf with hundreds of his followers, Iraq's national security minister said on Monday.

Women and children who joined 600-700 of his "Soldiers of Heaven" on the outskirts of the Shi'ite holy city may be among the casualties, Shirwan al-Waeli told Reuters. All those people not killed were in detention, many of them wounded.

These "Soldiers of Heaven" are not to be confused with our own homegrown "Soldiers of God," "Army of God," or "Soldiers of Christ."

Global Warming Climate Change

Experts slam upcoming global warming report (article copyright AP)
When I first saw this headline I thought, oh great, more "experts" in denial about this. But the article is about real experts "slamming" the upcoming report because it is "a sugar-coated version." They are saying it doesn't accurately reflect the extent of rising water levels and higher temperatures. A couple of excerpts:

Those calculations don't include the recent, and dramatic, melt-off of big ice sheets in two crucial locations:

They "don't take into account the gorillas -- Greenland and Antarctica," said Ohio State University earth sciences professor Lonnie Thompson, a polar ice specialist. "I think there are unpleasant surprises as we move into the 21st century."

***
In the past, the climate change panel didn't figure there would be large melt of ice in west Antarctica and Greenland this century and didn't factor it into the
predictions.

They didn't figure in these large melts because they didn't think those would happen this century. We are only in January of the seventh year of this century, and it has already happened. I don't think this is good, people.

Moonies Publish False Reports About Obama

Although it isn't mentioned in the following report by CNN, note that Insight Magazine, which is owned by the same company as The Washington Times, is the source of the vicious email I told you about in my previous post. For those who don't know, The Washington Times is owned by Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church(click for history.) Rev. Moon said on its 20th anniversary: "I founded The Washington Times as an expression of my love for America and to fulfill the Will of God, who seeks to establish America in His Providence."

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Allegations that Sen. Barack Obama was educated in a radical Muslim school known as a "madrassa" are not accurate, according to CNN reporting.

Insight Magazine, which is owned by the same company as The Washington Times, reported on its Web site last week that associates of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-New York, had unearthed information the Illinois Democrat and likely presidential candidate attended a Muslim religious school known for teaching the most fundamentalist form of Islam.

Obama lived in Indonesia as a child, from 1967 to 1971, with his mother and stepfather and has acknowledged attending a Muslim school, but an aide said it was not a madrassa. (Watch video of Obama's school )

Insight attributed the information in its article to an unnamed source, who said it was discovered by "researchers connected to Senator Clinton." A spokesman for Clinton, who is also weighing a White House bid, denied that the campaign was the source of the Obama claim.
He called the story "an obvious right-wing hit job."

Insight stood by its story in a response posted on its Web site Monday afternoon.
The Insight article was cited several times Friday on Fox News and was also referenced by the New York Post, The Glenn Beck program on CNN Headline News and a number of political blogs. (Watch how the Obama "gossip" spread )

School not a madrassaBut reporting by CNN in Jakarta, Indonesia and Washington, D.C., shows the allegations that Obama attended a madrassa to be false. CNN dispatched Senior International Correspondent John Vause to Jakarta to investigate.

He visited the Basuki school, which Obama attended from 1969 to 1971.
"This is a public school. We don't focus on religion," Hardi Priyono, deputy headmaster of the Basuki school, told Vause. "In our daily lives, we try to respect religion, but we don't give preferential treatment."

Vause reported he saw boys and girls dressed in neat school uniforms playing outside the school, while teachers were dressed in Western-style clothes.

"I came here to Barack Obama's elementary school in Jakarta looking for what some are calling an Islamic madrassa ... like the ones that teach hate and violence in Pakistan and Afghanistan," Vause said on the "Situation Room" Monday. "I've been to those madrassas in Pakistan ... this school is nothing like that."

Vause also interviewed one of Obama's Basuki classmates, Bandug Winadijanto, who claims that not a lot has changed at the school since the two men were pupils. Insight reported that Obama's political opponents believed the school promoted Wahhabism, a fundamentalist form of Islam, "and are seeking to prove it."

"It's not (an) Islamic school. It's general," Winadijanto said. "There is a lot of Christians, Buddhists, also Confucian. ... So that's a mixed school."

The Obama aide described Fox News' broadcasting of the Insight story "appallingly irresponsible."

Fox News executive Bill Shine told CNN "Reliable Sources" anchor Howard Kurtz that some of the network's hosts were simply expressing their opinions and repeatedly cited Insight as the source of the allegations.

Obama has noted in his two books, "Dreams From My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope," that he spent two years in a Muslim school and another two years in a Catholic school while living in Indonesia from age 6 to 10.

And So It Begins

Sigh. Another urban legend is born:

There is a vicious email going around stating that Barack Obama is a "stealth Muslim." No, wait - a Black stealth Muslim - even scarier.

Here are links to versions of the email and analyses by Snopes and About.

If you happen to receive one of these emails, try sending these links back to whoever sent it to you. Might help; won't hurt.

And stay tuned. These will probably get even worse.

Thanks. (Special thanks to Dawn)

P.S. Of course the good news is, this shows that the opposition has been forced to take the Senator's growing popularity seriously, and that they are desperate to try to stop him.

Not Again/Never Again

Not again. Yesterday I heard a reporter refer to the O. J. Simpson proceeding as the "trial of the century." I don't mean to minimize Simpson's crime, and I have the deepest respect and sympathy for the Goldmans, the Browns, and the Simpson children. However, the Simpson trial was a farce permitted and orchestrated by a judge and a defense attorney who wanted to put on a show for the media, had a famous but narcissistic cold-blooded murderer, an incompetent prosecution team, and a jury with an agenda. It was a circus-like phenonmenon that captured the world's attention for a while because it was, apparently, the most entertaining thing on television at the time. But it was in no way the "trial of the century."

Nuremberg was the trial of the century.

The Holocaust occurred in the same century. The horror of that and the significance of the subsequent trials at Nuremberg will continue to impact our world for all time. Just a little historical perspective here, please!
